Carl, a fisherman, is found dead, entangled in his own nets. He has a severe head wound. Was he murdered? Kazuo (Rick Yune), another fisherman, is suspected of the crime. During the investigation and trial, post-war anti-Japanese sentiments flare up. Ishmael (Ethan Hawke), a local journalist, has a hard time when he discovers that his ex-girlfriend, Hatsue (Youki Kudoh), is involved in the murder. When he investigates the case further, he makes a very horrifying discovery.
