Lichtontwerpers performance ontwikkelen een concept voor het verlichtingsontwerp voor een performance en houden toezicht op de uitvoering ervan. Hun werk is gebaseerd op onderzoek en artistieke visie. Hun ontwerp wordt beïnvloed door en is van invloed op andere ontwerpen en moet in overeenstemming zijn met deze ontwerpen en de algemene artistieke visie. Daarom werken de ontwerpers nauw samen met artistiek directeuren, operatoren en het artistiek team. Tijdens de repetities en de uitvoering coachen zij de operatoren ten behoeve van een optimale timing en uitvoering. De lichtontwerpers performance ontwikkelen de lichtpercelen, de cue-sheets en andere documentatie ter ondersteuning van de operatoren en het productieteam. Zij werken soms ook als zelfstandige artiesten en creëren lichtkunst buiten het kader van een performance.
